What is generally not considered an outlet by the NEC?

The National Electrical Code (NEC) defines an outlet as a point in the electrical system at which current is taken from the circuit. A wall socket, power strip, and floor outlet all serve this function, as each provides a means to connect electrical devices to the power supply.

The device box containing a 3-way switch, however, does not qualify as an outlet because it is not a point where power is delivered for direct use by electrical devices. Instead, the switch controls the flow of electricity to lighting fixtures or other devices based on its position, and it does not provide a direct connection for plugging in appliances or tools.
